Nearly three decades after giving birth to one of the most enduring collaborations in underground hip-hop, Aesop Rock and Blockhead are reuniting for Trouble Mountain, a new album that explores escape, survival and the strange landscapes of everyday life. Inspired by the nostalgic promises of the Poconos holiday resort commercials, which invaded New York airwaves as a child, the album imagines a fictional getaway where the quest for a new life turns out to be just as disorienting as the reality left behind. With Trouble Mountain, his 13th studio album, Aesop Rock once again delivers a highly inventive writing, transforming family history, work, memories, and absurd mechanisms of modern life into both impactful and deeply human reflections. Blockhead's production plays an equally vital role, combining the duo's recognizable chemistry with clean, evolving soundscapes that are both familiar and resolutely exploratory. Together, they reconnect with the themes that have been going through their work since Labor Days: toil, alienation, and the persistent hope that somewhere we would rather be. Far from offering a real escape, Trouble Mountain questions the reasons that drive us to constantly seek one, giving birth to one of the duo's most imaginative and striking collaborations to date.
